PROJECTION-MAPPED ARTWORK
Pip Thornton
Pip Thornton is an artist and researcher whose theory and practice explore the politics of online spaces, and the structures of power in the digital economy, in creative ways.
We joined forces with Pip to help creatively and technically expand her work related to ‘linguistic capitalism’. The result was a live data artwork called ‘Newspeak’, which was projected across the Inspace City Screens in Edinburgh as part of Data Lates, August 2019.
OUR ROLES
Design, Programming, Data wrangling, Touchdesigner development, Projection mapping.
Linguistic Capitalism
The system streamed the price of every word in George Orwell’s 1984 (as charged by Google Ads for advertising clickthroughs) through a 7-screen digital ‘tickertape’ each day, and marked whether the word had risen or fallen in value.

Touchdesigner and the Web
We created a system that scraped the value of each keyword from Google Adwords every day. The data was then formatted, styled and displayed in Touchdesigner before being sent to the projection mapped screens.
Projection Mapped
The live output was split across 7 projectors, allowing the display to be mapped across the length of Inspace Gallery.
