Festival Director Jenny Niven wanted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of James Hogg’s The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner and commissioned Ben Harrison, co-artistic director of acclaimed experiential theatre company Grid Iron, who in turn approached us to bring our UX/UI expertise to the production of an immersive audiovisual journey.
Immersive theatre in your pocket
Featuring eight filmed scenes written and directed by renowned playwright and director Ben Harrison, this immersive audiovisual journey, narrated by award-winning author Louise Welsh, brings pivotal moments from the original novel to life accompanied by an original score composed by Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai.

Show Trailer
“I found Ray Interactive to be fast, highly skilled and responsive to the digital needs of the project, delivering a clear and accessible mobile phone app that delivered complex content in the clearest possible way to its audience. They came up with powerful creative solutions to any challenge I presented them with.’”
– Ben Harrison (Director)

A smooth experience – UX/UI
This mobile experience unfolded in multiple locations around the city centre. Each audience member was guided by the narrator’s voice and a GPS-enabled map. We worked closely with the director Ben Harrison to design and produce a digital experience to match his vision, while making sure it ran smoothly on each parcipant’s personal device.

Tailored media solution
We programmed a bespoke compression and streaming solution to accommodate the large amount of video required for this experience. Once downloaded, the experience ran in the browser without the need for a continuous Internet connection.
Split Personality
We designed the main graphic to evoke the character’s dual nature, using image distortion techiques in TouchDesigner.

Fun fact
Chuck Palahniuk was inspired by The Confessions of a Justified Sinner when he wrote Fight Club. Both stories feature a mysterious and sadistic character that psychologically tortures the protagonist.
The project was well received.
A four star review in the List.
