DATA LIGHT BOX

A commission from Edinburgh University to design and produce a controllable LED matrix to fit inside the pre-existing light box at Inspace. Installed Nov 2020.

Design and production: Ray Interactive & BLV

Programming: Brendan McCarthy & Sam Healy

LED Hardware: Chris Harrison

Construction: Vicente Ridaura Harvey

CNC fabrication: Splintr

We produced and installed a bespoke LED wall at Inspace for the University of Edinburgh, together with a custom software package that can synchronise content across the LEDs and the seven projectors available in the space. The additional functionality is seamlessly integrated into the building’s existing IT network.

CONTROL SOFTWARE V.01

We created an open source software solution that allows users to easily send content to the LED wall and the seven projectors also in the space. To accommodate the street facing exhibitions this initial version of the software also has a built in scheduling system to control the timings of exhibition content.

The open source nature of the system means that tutors, students and exhibitors can add, edit and build onto the system. The software is created with a rapid prototyping tool called TouchDesigner. This highly creative programming environment has become a standard for installation design. It is a versatile data processing hub which can accommodate many types of inputs and outputs, from cameras, sensors and scanners to LEDs, projectors and robotics. We're very interested to see how this installation develops overtime.
